Ansonia alarm clocks
The best way to wake up in the morning is with an Ansonia alarm clock; let’s take a look at what makes the Ansonia alarm clock different from the others and why it is so popular among the clock collectors around the world. To begin the story of the Ansonia alarm clock we first need to look at the history behind the company and the founder.
It all started with Anson Greene Phelps, born in Simsbury, Connecticut on March of 1781, he was orphaned while still an adolescent and was raised by the minister of Simsbury, Connecticut. He began as a mercantile manufacturer in Hartford, Connecticut, manufacturing horse saddles and selling them in the south. He became so successful that he soon built a large brick building on the corner of North Main Street in Hartford, Connecticut which was referred to as Phelps block. He joined with a partner by the name of Peck and soon started the manufacturing and distributing of metals. Mr. Phelps picked the perfect location for his metal manufacturing company which would be located just north of Derby, Connecticut in New Haven County, on the east side of the Naugatuck River, it supplied power to run his manufacturing plant. It was soon named Ansonia, after the Anson Phelps.
Mr. Phelps went into the clock business as a way to create more business for his metal company. He did so, with much success, it is said that his estate back in 1853 was worth over $2 million, of which over half of the estate was property in Connecticut and New York. Mr. Phelps was known also as a Christian merchant, he helped many charitable causes in his life time. It is said that in his will he left generous amounts to the charities that had been such an important part of his life. This was a man who not only cared about others while he was alive but remembered them when he died. He ran his business with morality and passion.
There were many designs to the Ansonia alarm clocks, most of the casings were made from different types of wood as well as metal. The clocks range from 8 inches in height to up over two feet in height, some of them even had peg legs.
