Ansonia Porcelain Clock
The beautiful and elegant Ansonia Porcelain clocks became an extremely popular line of mantel and wall clocks during the late 1880's right through to the early 1900's. The porcelain clocks average about 14 inches in height with the average width being around 13 inches. Most of the Ansonia Porcelain clocks were eight day clocks with a half hour gong strike. Some of the most popular porcelain clocks have 5 inch porcelain faces with beveled glass, French sash or Rococo Sash and a much sought after visible escapement dial.
The Ansonia Clock Company not only used black Roman numerals, but Arabic numerals as well, giving their customers a choice. The company also designed a variety of different shades of colors, such as greens, blues, and pinks for their most popular clock. To express beauty and elegance of the porcelain casings, they added gold gilding to accent and frame the outline of the clocks, which was very popular back in the late 1880's. The many different designs in art tints that were used on the porcelain clocks were mostly floral, from roses, to lilacs, to pansies.
Each and every clock is a work of art and collected by the old as well as the not so old, they are all masterpieces in their own right. The movements are all brass with the name Ansonia engraved on the back of the movement. The Ansonia trademark which is the capital letter “A” is located in a square inside a triangle on the face of the clock just beneath the hand movement.
