Ansonia Shelf Clock

The Ansonia Company produced over 440 different styles of clocks in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. One of them being the shelf clock which was much smaller in size compared to the other clocks they had earlier produced.  Some of the clocks were as short as 6 inches, while others were taller than 21 inches.

The shelf clocks were produced using coil springs and pendulums. Most of the Ansonia shelf clocks had three key holes in the face, one was for the hands, one for the chime and the third one was for the speed.

The faces were made of either metal, porcelain or paper. However, Ansonia was one of the first companies that used a hard rubber dial instead of the usual metal or porcelain on this style.  Some of the shelf clocks were made of porcelain done in a variety of color schemes and floral designs, while others had metal casings and were painted with black enamel. They also offered several different types of woods to make their casings such as oak and mahogany. They were small but very stylish, some had pillars and others had figurines.

The one thing they had in common was the movement inside the clock; they all have Ansonisa etched on the back of movement.  You will find some clocks have a brass bezel with beveled glass to protect most of the dials.  They used a lot of different casings when they produced the shelf clock, which is Ansonia’s style; they had a clock for every taste.

Remember that the Ansonia trade mark  is located under the hands on the dial of the clock, it is the capital “A” in a square, inside a triangle, if you cannot find the trademark you can look sometimes on the face and see the words, manufactured by Ansonia Clock Company New York United States of America, which is located between the gold bezel and the numbers and if you cannot find either one remember the back of the brass movement will have Ansonia etched on it.
