Antique wall clocks

An Antique wall clock is any wall clock that is over 100 years old. It all began in Germany in the early 1500's were the first wall clock was introduced with a spring mechanism. The spring mechanism makes the power wheel transmit a motion, using pinion gears, which in turn moves the wheel that controls the hour hand on the face of a clock, and also controls a separate wheel for the minute hand; however the minute hand was not invented until the mid 1600's. Because of the clocks mainspring becoming unwound, the movement of the gears also slowed and it was said to be a very inaccurate timepiece.

A century and a half later, the pendulum wall clock was introduced. The pendulum clock consists of a rod with a weight at the end which once wound, continues to swing back and forth because of gravity. The pendulum was developed by a scientist by the name of Galileo somewhere around the 1600's. He discovered that the swing of the pendulum never changed and he could accurately measure the time of each swing.

Some of the interesting facts about the early wall clocks include; they did not have minute hands, they only had hour hands, they kept inaccurate time due to the spring mechanism; and because it took so long to build one, they were very expensive, so expensive that only the rich could afford to buy a wall clock. Before the early 1700's none of the wall clocks had glass to cover the dials of the clocks, which meant they were subject to the elements.

They went on to improve the wall clocks by adding an escapement movement which controls the fixed swinging of the pendulum, The escapement allows the exact impulses to continue the pendulum's back and forth motion, by allowing the release of the gear train wheel to move ahead an exact amount at each movement of the pendulum.

The wall clock casings were made in a variety of woods with mostly brass movements. The faces were wonderfully large and very easy to see, they remain one of the most popular clocks in today’s market.
