German Clocks

In the early to mid 1400's the clock makers of Germany came from families that were known for being jewelers as well as goldsmiths and silversmiths. This resulted in some very well crafted and stylish clock casings. The next great clock invention that came from Germany was a portable timepiece, invented in the early 1500's, the inventor was a man by the name of Helein, it is said that while in an asylum for 4 years, he built a portable watch that when wound just once, lasted for forty days. Germany was also known for one of the earliest alarm clocks, it was known as the German iron wall clock with a bronze bell. The clock stood 19 inches in height and had an open framework. It had to be hung high on a wall to give the driven weight plenty of room to fall.

One of Germans most popular clocks is known as the cuckoo clock; it was made in Black Forest, Germany in the mid 1700's and is still made there today. The Black Forest is a mountain range located in the southwestern part of Germany and if you ever get a chance to visit this beautiful place, remember there is a road that goes through the Black Forest that is named the "German Clock Road", where you are able to visit clock museums along with several different clock companies.

Another famous clock company in the 1800's, located in Black Forest, Germany was named Winterhalder and Hoffmeir; they were known for their beautiful Victorian clocks as well as their grandfather clocks. Also in the late 1800's a German clock maker by the name of Anton Harder invented the Anniversary clock or the 400 day clock which remains a very popular design of clock today.

German clocks are known for their designs along with their inventors, They remain very strong in the market place today,( no matter how expensive their clocks are), the fact of the matter is no one wants an imitation clock just to save a few dollars, they all want the original German clocks. That in its self keeps German clocks one of the number one top selling clocks today.
