Vintage Clocks
A vintage clock is a clock that was produced or manufactured in the United States somewhere between the years of 1920 and 1970. The word vintage, from what I have read, relates to the age of the clock, not so much the year it was made. The research I have done states that a clock that is somewhere in the vicinity of 40 to 99 years old is considered to be vintage and any clock made over 100 years ago is considered to be an antique. Most of the vintage clocks were either electric, spring wound, or battery operated.
I remember some of the clocks that hung on the walls of my home while growing up; they included the famous starburst, the cool sundial, and let’s not forget the black and white cat with the eyes and tail that moved. It was a great era to grow up in and the vintage clocks became a part of my fondest memories.
The alarm clock that I had beside my bed in high school, which was back in the late 1960’s, was a gold wind up with two bells on the top, and once that alarm went off there was no way your brain could go back to sleep. The more traditional vintage alarm clocks, which date back to the 1950's and 60's, were equipped with radios and were manufactured in a variety of colors, they were very cool looking.
Some companies within the last few years have made replicas of these cool clocks so you should be careful when purchasing a vintage clock to make sure you are not getting a copy cat. The clocks that were manufactured in the United States were made to last until the end of time. You can find vintage clocks in some of the antique shops today as well as on line.
If you go back and watch some of the old television shows like the I Love Lucy Show, Leave it to Beaver or My Three Sons, the shows will give you an appreciation for the many different unique styles that were developed 40 years ago. There are many different vintage styles, which depending on your age; you will be able to relate to all most every one of them.
